Building a Harbor Freight 5×10 Trailer for Our DIY Camper Build
Building a Harbor Freight 5×10 Trailer for Our DIY Camper Build
A reliable trailer is the foundation of a successful homemade camper. For our DIY square-drop camper project, we’re using a Harbor Freight 5×10 Modular Trailer as the starting point.
On HomemadeCamper.com, we’re documenting the project from the trailer foundation through the camper construction, electrical installation, finishing work, and camping adventures. This article introduces the trailer that started our build.
Why We Chose a Harbor Freight 5×10 Trailer
We wanted a trailer platform that would provide a practical foundation for our homemade camper. The 5×10 size gives us a rectangular footprint for our square-drop design while keeping the project manageable for a DIY build. You can learn more about Harbor Freight’s trailer products on the official Harbor Freight website.
Before starting a project like this, review the trailer manufacturer’s current assembly instructions, rated capacity, and requirements for safe road use. The finished trailer’s usable payload depends on the actual trailer specifications and the weight of the completed camper and its contents.

Preparing for the Camper Build
The trailer is the base for everything that follows, so careful preparation matters. During a trailer-based camper project, important considerations include:
- Following the manufacturer’s assembly instructions and torque specifications.
- Checking the frame, fasteners, wheels, tires, lights, and coupler.
- Planning the camper floor dimensions and how the structure will attach to the trailer.
- Considering the finished camper’s total weight and weight distribution.
- Confirming applicable registration, lighting, and road-safety requirements.
The camper structure must be designed so its weight is supported appropriately by the trailer. Do not exceed the trailer’s rated capacity or the limits of any other component.
What’s Next in Our Homemade Camper Build?
With the trailer as our starting point, we’ll continue through the construction of our square-drop camper. Future stages cover the floor and wall framing, sheathing, insulation, electrical system, exterior protection, interior finishing, and camping trips.
